Activity 3 - Launch and Recovery
Types of Atlantic launch and recovery
Drive on - Drive off (DO-DO) launch
Requires a Launch Vehicle to be launched.
Lifeboat can drive on and drive off.
For recovery in rough weather uses a net
recovery system.
Turn-table system for positioning the Atlantic
after recovery.
Built in water tanks for running engines pre-launch.
Drive on - Drive off floating dock
Normally used within sheltered waters/harbours.
Floating docks are best used in the absence of a
boat house.
Drive on / Reverse off recovery system.
Reduces the need for antifouling.
Quick and efficient launch and recovery system.
Requires boat cover to protect from the elements.
Davit launch
Used in harbours without access to slipway.
Ideal launch system for vertical walls or piers.
Minimum of three shore/ crew members required.
Ability to position boat on launch into the
strongest elements.
Boat can be stored undercover away from elements.
Weight considerations to be considered on launch
and recovery.
Slipway
Requires winch system to launch and recover.
Atlantic drives on / reverses off.
Crew will board Atlantic from the slipway.
Normally located in harbours.
Reduced number of shore crew required.
