Activity 3 - Launch and Recovery
Post recovery
On recovery of the lifeboat, the engines must be flushed
with fresh water.
Salt water is a corrosive killer of the aluminum used in
the engine, so flushing every time after use in salt water
use is a must. Left unchecked inside the cooling passages,
saltwater will quickly build up and may cause cooling
blockages, leading to overheating. Over time it can corrode
an engine from the inside out.
This can be done using the water tanks on the carriage or a
hose pipe connected to a water supply.
If your lifeboat is stored outside, it is advised during
freezing temperatures not to flush the engines due to the
risk of the fresh water freezing.
