Troubleshooting an RS-232 B us
In this example, you are looking at analog characteristics of a digital signal in a digital circuit. You are doing this to analyze
the signal integrity of a signal. F or example, you might be testing RS-232 bus signals.
You can use your MSO4000B Series oscilloscope, with its up to 4 analog channels and 16 digital channels to track down the
problem. It will even decode your RS-232 signals into ASCII characters.
Basic S trategy
First, you will display and acquire the digital signal. T hen, yo u will look at both the analog and digital representations of the
signal. Finally, you will search through each RS-232 byte with the search/mark functions.
NOTE. Trig
gering on R S-232 bus signals requires use of the DPO4COMP Serial Triggering and Analysis Module. (See
page 16, Application Module Free Trial.)
1. Connect the desired analog probe tip to the
desired test point.
2. Push Default Setup.
3. Push Autoset.
