Noticeondeletingdatafromyourharddiskdriveorsolid-statedrive
Ascomputersspreadintoeverycorneroflife,theyprocessmoreandmoreinformation.Thedataonyour
computer,someofwhichmightbesensitive,isstoredonaharddiskdrive.Beforeyoudisposeof,sell,or
handoveryourcomputer,besuretodeletedatastoredonit.
Handingyourcomputerovertosomeoneelsewithoutdeletingtheloadedsoftware,suchasoperating
systemsandprogramsoftware,mightevenviolatelicenseagreements.Youareadvisedtocheckthe
termsandconditionsofthoselicenseagreements.
Therearemethodsthatseemtodeletethedata:
•Movethedatatotherecyclebin,andthenclickEmptyrecyclebin.
•UsetheDeleteoption.
•Formatyourharddiskdrive,usingthesoftwareforinitializingit.
•Usingtherecoveryprogramtosettheharddiskdrivebacktothefactorydefaultsettings.
Theseoperations,however,onlychangetheleallocationofthedata,theydonotdeletethedataitself.In
otherwords,thedataretrievalprocessingisdisabledunderanoperatingsystemsuchasWindows.The
dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof
specialsoftwarefordatarecovery.Thereisariskthatpeopleofbadfaithmightreadandmisusethecritical
dataonharddiskdrivesforunexpectedpurposes.
Topreventleakageofdata,itbecomesveryimportantthatyoutakeresponsibilityfordeletingallthedata
fromtheharddiskdrivewhenyoudisposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.Youcandestroythedata
physicallybysmashingtheharddiskdrivewithahammer,ormagneticallybymeansofstrongmagnetic
power,thusmakingthedataunreadable.Butwerecommendthatyoumakeuseofthesoftware(payware)or
service(payservice)specicallydevelopedforthepurpose.

IfanEncryptionsolid-statedriveoraDiskEncryptionharddiskdriveissupportedandinstalledinyour
computer,youcanlogicallydisposeofallthedataonthedriveinaveryshorttimebyerasingthe
cryptographickey.Thedataencryptedwiththeoldkeyisnotphysicallyerasedbutremainsonthedrive;
however,itcannotbedecryptedwithouttheoldkey.ThisfeatureisenabledbyThinkPadSetupMenu
ExtensionUtilityandisavailableasamenuiteminThinkPadSetup.

Ifyoursystemispreinstalledwitharewallprogram,itprotectsagainstcomputerInternetsecuritythreats,
unauthorizedaccesses,intrusions,andInternetattacks.Italsoprotectsyourprivacy.
