Hydraulic System Safety
Seek immediate medical attention if uid is injected
into skin. Injected uid must be surgically removed
within a few hours by a doctor .
Ensure that all hydraulic-uid hoses and lines are
in good condition and all hydraulic connections
and ttings are tight before applying pressure to
the hydraulic system.
Keep your body and hands away from pinhole
leaks or nozzles that eject high-pressure hydraulic
uid.
Use cardboard or paper to nd hydraulic leaks.
Safely relieve all pressure in the hydraulic system
before performing any work on the hydraulic
system.
Hydraulic Fluid
Specication
The hydraulic-uid reservoir is lled at the factory with
high-quality hydraulic uid. Check the level of the
hydraulic uid before you start the engine for the
rst time and daily thereafter .
Hydraulic uid viscosity: 5W -50
Use uids that meet all the following material
properties and industry specications. Consult with
your lubricant distributor to identify a satisfactory
product.
Note: T oro does not assume responsibility for
damage caused by improper substitutions, so use
only products from reputable manufacturers who will
stand behind their recommendation.
High-V iscosity Index/Low-Pour Point
Anti-W ear Hydraulic Fluid, ISO VG 46
Material Properties:
St @ 40°C 42 to 50V iscosity , ASTM D445
St @ 100°C 7.6 to 8.5
V iscosity Index ASTM
D2270
140 or higher
Pour Point, ASTM D97 -40°F to -49°F
FZG, Fail stage
1 1 or better
W ater content (new uid) 500 ppm (maximum)
Industry Specications: V ickers I-286-S (Quality Level),
V ickers M-2950-S (Quality
Level), Denison HF-0
Important: The ISO VG 46 multigrade uid
offers optimal performance in a wide range
of temperature conditions. For operation in
consistently high ambient temperatures, 65°F
(18°C) to 120°F (49°C), ISO VG 68 hydraulic uid
may offer improved performance.
Important: Many hydraulic uids are almost
colorless, making it difcult to spot leaks. A
red dye additive for the hydraulic-system oil is
available in 20 ml (2/3 oz) bottles. 1 bottle is
sufcient for 15 to 22 L (4 to 6 US gallons) of
hydraulic oil. Order T oro Part No. 44-2500 from
your authorized T oro distributor .
Servicing the Hydraulic
System
Preparing to Service the Hydraulic
System
1. Park the machine on a level surface.
2. Disengage the PT O, lower the cutting unit, and
engage the parking brake.
3. Place all controls in the NEUTRAL position and
start the engine.
4. Run the engine at lowest possible engine speed
to purge the system of air .
Important: Do not run the PT O.
5. Cycle the steering wheel several times fully to
the left and right, and align the steering wheels
straight forward.
