GeoExplorer Series Getting Started Guide Internet and network connection 41
Internet and network connection
You can connect an external modem to the GeoExplorer series handheld to
provide a dial-up connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or
network.
When you connect to an ISP, you can access the Internet, including e-mail
and Web pages. When you connect to a network, you can access the
Internet, files on the network, and that network’s intranet.
To connect to the Internet or a network you need to:
• get all the connection information you need (see page 41)
• set up a remote connection (see page 42)
• set up a mail service if you want to use e-mail (see page 43)
• connect an external modem or mobile phone to the handheld (see
page 44)
• connect to your ISP or network (see page 44)
Before you begin
Before you can create a connection, you need to set up a Point-to-Point
Protocol (PPP) account with an ISP. Make sure you have the following
information from the ISP:
• your username
• your password
• the dial-up phone number for the ISP or network
If you want to connect to a mail server, you will also need:
• the POP3 or IMAP4 server name
• the SMTP host name
• the domain name
If you cannot connect with the default TCP/IP settings, you may also need:
• the names or IP addresses of the primary and secondary Domain
Name Servers (DNS) (for example, dns.seaview.gov, or 255.1.255.1)
• details of TCP/IP settings
