Maintenance Procedures
Battery - Maintenance
In case of acid contact:
External: Flush with plenty of water. If eyes have been exposed, flush with water for 15
minutes and get prompt medical attention.
Internal: Call a physician immediately.
1. Turn Ignition Switch off.
NOTICE: Do not turn Battery Ground Disconnect
Switch off while Wait to Disconnect Lamp is illuminated.
2. Open battery compartment cover (1).
3. Turn Battery Ground Disconnect Switch off.
4. Remove black negative (-) cables (2), then red
positive (+) cables (3) from each battery.
5. Inspect battery cables and replace if damaged.
6. When performing the following:
Checking electrolyte levels, refer to
"Battery
Electrolyte Level - Check / Fill", page 5-10.
Charging batteries, refer to
"Batteries - Charge",
page
5-10.
Replacing batteries, refer to
"Batteries - Replace",
page
5-11.
7. Clean terminals and clamps with a stiff wire brush.
Apply a light coating of petroleum jelly around the
base of each terminal.
8. Install crossover cable (4), if removed. Install red positive (+) cable (3), then black negative (-)
cable (2) to battery terminals.
9. Spray terminals with a battery terminal sealer.
10. Install red cover (5) over positive cable clamps and black cover (6) over negative cable clamps.
WARNING
Battery fumes are flammable and can explode. Battery explosion can
blind. Acid can blind and burn.
Keep all burning materials, flame, and sparks away from battery. Tools
and cable clamps can make sparks. Shield eyes and face. Do not smoke.
Avoid breathing fumes. Work in well ventilated area. Read Operator’s
and Maintenance Manual.
WARNING
Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead
compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and
reproductive harm.
Wash hands after handling.
