DTEjoiningOAMsub-layersupportsactive/passivemode.When
enablingOAM,DTEthatsupportsthetwomodesshouldselectac-
tiveorpassive.
RemoteDiscovery
OAMprovidesmechanismfordetectingifremoteDTEhasOAM
sub-layer ,ifnditisn'tsatised,OAMclientwillknowtheresult
andgeneratefailalarm.Therearetwocasesforfail.Oneisthat
peerenddoesn'topenOAMfunction,anotherislinkconnection
fault.Duringtheremotediscoveryprocess,theinformationOAM-
PDUtagdomaincarriescurrentlinkevent(linkfault,emergency
failureandemergencyevent).Butthespecicfaultdenition,
composedoflinkfault,emergencyfailureandemergencyevent,
relatestoimplementation.Sotherearetwowaystoknowlinkhas
faultbyremotediscovery.OneisknewbyOAMPDUtimeout,an-
otheristodenesomedetailedemergencylinkeventstoletclient
layerknowwhichfaultoccursonlinkfrominformationOAMPDU.
TheDTEwhichisconguredactivemodelauchesdiscovery
process.Whendiscoveryprocessnishes,remoteOAMpeeren-
tityisinactivemode,activeDTEisallowedtosendanyOAMPDU,
DTEconguredpassivemodedoesn'tlaunchdiscoveryprocess,
passiveDTEfeedbacksremoteDTElaunchingdiscoveryprocess.
RemoteLoopback
OAMprovidesoptionaldatalinklayerframeloopbackmode.Itis
controlledbytheremote.OAMremoteloopbackisusedforfault
locationandlinkperformancetest.WhenremoteDTEisinOAM
remoteloopmode,localandremoteDTEstatisticscanbequerid
andcomparedatanytime.Querycanhappenbefore,during
andaftertheprocessthatloopissenttoremoteDTE.Inaddition,
analyzeOAMsub-layerloopframetoensureadditionalinformation
aboutlinkhealth(namelyensureframedroppingforlinkfault).
IfanOAMclienthassentaLoopbackControlOAMPDUandiswait-
ingforthepeerDTEtorespondwithanInformationOAMPDUthat
indicatesitisinOAMremoteloopbackmode,andthatOAMclient
receivesanOAMremoteloopbackcommandfromthepeerdevice,
thefollowingproceduresarerecommended:a)IfthelocalDTEhas
ahighersource_addressthanthepeer ,itshouldenterOAMremote
loopbackmodeatthecommandofitspeer .IfthelocalDTEhas
alowersource_addressthanthepeer ,itshouldignoretheOAM
remoteloopbackcommandfromitspeerandcontinueasifitwere
neverreceived.
