Cisco CATALYST 2960 - Small to Medium-Sized Network Using Catalyst 2960, 2960-S and 2960-C Switches; Figure 1-4 shows a configuration for a network of up to 500 employees. This network uses a switch stack with high-speed connections to two routers. This ensures connectivity to the Internet, WAN, and mission-critical network resources if one of the routers fails. The switch stack uses cross-stack EtherChannel for loading sharing.; This network uses VLANs to logically segment the network into well-defined broadcast groups and for security management. Data and multimedia traffic are configured on the same VLAN. Voice traffic from the Cisco IP Phones are configured on separate VVIDs. If data, multimedia, and voice traffic are assigned to the same VLAN, only one VLAN can be configured per wiring closet.; When an end station in one VLAN needs to communicate with an end station in another VLAN, a router or Layer 3 switch routes the traffic to the destination VLAN. In this network, the routers are providing inter-VLAN routing. VLAN access control lists (VLAN maps) on the stack provide intra-VLAN security and prevent unauthorized users from accessing critical areas of the network.

Where to Go Next
For configuration instructions about using the CLI setup program, go to Appendix C, “Configuring the
Switch with the CLI-Based Setup Program.
Where to Go Next
If the default configuration is satisfactory, the switch needs no further configuration. You can use any
of these management options to change the default configuration:
Start the device manager, which is in the switch memory, to manage individual and standalone
switches. The device manager is a web interface that offers quick configuration and monitoring.
You can access the device manager from anywhere in your network through a web browser.
For more information, see the device manager online help.
Start the Network Assistant application, which is described in the Getting Started with Cisco
Network Assistant guide. Through this GUI, you can configure and monitor a switch cluster or an
individual switch.
Use the CLI from the console to configure the switch as a member of a cluster or as an individual
switch. See the Catalyst 2960 Switch Software Configuration Guide and the Catalyst 2960 Switch
Command Reference on Cisco.com for information on using the CLI with a Catalyst 2960 switch.
Start an SNMP application such as the CiscoView application.
