The purpose of the instrument cluster gauges, mes-
sages, and indicator lamps is to keep the driver
informed about the operating condition of the vehicle.
If an abnormal condition occurs, the driver is
informed by gauges, an indicator lamp, and a chime.
The driver can seek service before damage occurs.
The instrument cluster has warning lamps and
indicators for the following systems that are located
within the message centers in the cluster:
Airbag
Antilock Brakes
Brake Warning
Front Fog Lamps
Rear Fog Lamps
High Beam
Left and Right Turn Signals
Malfunction Indicator (ISO Symbol)
Seat Belt Warning
Skip-Shift (in Tachometer)
Trunk Ajar
The message centers are part of the instrument
cluster and if found faulty or defective, the entire
cluster must be replaced (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - REMOVAL). If only a
Light Emitting Diode (LED) is burned out, then the
entire cluster must be replaced.
The instrument panel has a Gauge Pack that is
connected to the instrument cluster via vehicle wir-
ing. It contains:
Coolant Temperature Gauge and High Coolant
Temperature LED
Oil Pressure Gauge and Low Oil Pressure LED
Oil Temperature Gauge and High Oil Tempera-
ture LED
Passenger Airbag OFF LED
Voltage Gauge (Battery Charging) and Low/High
Charging Voltage LED
The instrument cluster has a Liquid Crystal Dis-
play (LCD) for the following systems:
Door Ajar
Doors Unlocked
Lo Tire
Odometer
Trip Odometer
OPERATION
OPERATION
All gauges are the analog type. When the ignition
switch is moved to the OFF position, the cluster
drives each gauge to its lowest position. The individ-
ual gauges in the cluster and gauge pack are not ser-
viceable and require complete replacement of the
cluster or gauge pack as an assembly if one or more
gauges are inoperable.
The gauges are the magnetic air-core type. When
the ignition switch is OFF, the gauge pointers should
rest at or below the lowest graduation. The instru-
ment cluster and gauge pack may be checked quickly
by using the cluster self-diagnostics (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - STAN-
DARD PROCEDURE - SELF-DIAGNOSTICS). After
bulb check, (with the key in the RUN position and
engine running) all MODULE warning indicators
(Airbag, ABS, MIL, Charging System, etc.) should be
extinguished. If any of these indicators stay ON
(excluding seat belt-if unbuckled), use the DRB IIIt
scan tool to determine module faults. Also refer to
the proper Body Diagnostic Procedures manual for
cluster self-diagnostic results.
NOTE: If any of the gauge pointers are stuck on the
wrong side of the pointer stop, perform the instru-
ment cluster self-diagnostic check (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - STANDARD
PROCEDURE - SELF-DIAGNOSTICS). This will
“sweep” all the pointers to the correct side of the
pointer stop.
One button is used to switch the display from trip
to total mileage. Holding the button when the display
is in the trip mode will reset the trip mileage. This
button is also used to put the cluster in self-diagnos-
tic mode (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENT
CLUSTER - STANDARD PROCEDURE - SELF-DI-
AGNOSTICS). Some of the indicators will come on
briefly for a bulb check when the ignition is turned
from OFF to ON. The LED’s are non serviceable and
if one or more warning indictor LED’s are out, the
entire cluster must be replaced.
The bulbs are serviceable. They are the fog lamp,
high beam, left and right turn signal, engine ISO
symbol, and ABS indicators.
In the event that the instrument cluster looses
communication with all other modules on the Pro-
grammable Communication Interface (PCI) data bus,
the cluster will display “nobuS” in the LCD display.
The LCD display also displays odometer trip or total
mileage.
The message center indicator lamps are an infor-
mation system that provides the following messages.
Airbag indicator: is turned on by the Occupant
Restraint Controller (ORC) if a malfunction has
occurred that effects the Airbag system. There should
also be a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) set in the
ORC.
Antilock Brake indicator: turned on when
there is a detected system fault with the antilock
braking system. The Controller Antilock Brakes
(CAB) will store a DTC when this occurs.
