HUB / BEARING
DESCRIPTION
The wheel bearing used on the front of this vehicle
is a unit type combined hub and bearing assembly
(Fig. 1). The hub and bearing is made up of the
wheel mounting hub (flange) and the wheel bearing.
The hub has five wheel mounting studs installed in
it. The hub is pressed into the bearing. It is held
together on the vehicle by the axle shaft and hub
nut.
The hub and bearing assembly is mounted to the
knuckle and is retained by four mounting bolts acces-
sible from the back of the knuckle.
The bearing requires no periodic maintenance. The
hub and bearing is serviced as an assembly if the
hub or bearing is determined to be defective. The
wheel mounting studs may be replaced separately if
necessary.
OPERATION
The hub and bearing has internal bearings that
allow the hub to rotate with the wheel and tire as
well as the axle shaft. The wheel mounting studs
allow the wheel and brake rotor to be mounted to the
vehicle.
