• 2 Basic concepts
In this chapter, you’ll find information regarding the principal elements that make PK5
Oriental work, including useful information which will help you to understand the struc-
ture of the instrument.
To gain access to the functions, as well as following the instructions outlined below, it is
also possible to follow a shorter and more direct route: by holding down the correspond-
ing function button for about 2 seconds, PK5 Oriental enters automatically into the edit
of the function. This method allows rapid interventions and shortens your editing times.
Style/RealTime and Song Style
The PK5 Oriental operating modes are:
Style/RealTime mode: to play with the accompaniments or use PK5 Oriental
as a conventional keyboard. Select a PERFORMANCE
or a STYLE to activate this mode (the arrowhead to the
left of the display points to the STYLE and PERF menu
function respectively). PK5 Oriental powers up in this
mode every time it is turned on.
Song Style mode: to record the keyboard sounds with accompaniments and
create 8 track Songs to use as backings, press the
RECORD button in the sequencer to activate this mode.
If Song Styles are present in memory, select a SONG
STYLE by specifying the corresponding number (96-99)
on the keypad activated for STYLE/SONG selection
(Style/Song LED on).
STYLE AND REALTIME MODES
Style and Real Time modes have a Performance in common. Styles can play up to 8
(5+3) tracks simultaneously while Real Time up to 4. Both modes have identical Per-
formance editing tasks.
Style/RealTime Performances are always divided into two parts:
the first 5 tracks are dedicated to the auto-accompaniment;
the remaining 3 are assigned to the keyboard sections (Upper 1, Upper 2, Lower)
which play in real time.
In RealTime mode, (with the sequencer off), a 4th real time track is available, corre-
sponding to the bass accompaniment track of the Style which can be “disconnected”
from the Styles to play Manual Bass.
Sounds and accompaniments can be recalled by selecting a Style (by specifying the cor-
responding number on the Style/Song selection keypad) or a Performance (by pressing
the Performance Recall button and selecting a Performance with the function buttons
F1…F9 under the display).
