Hot-Swap
System
Fans
The
following
procedures
describe
the
removal
and
replacement
of
the
hot-swap
system
fans.
Before
performing
the
following
procedures,
read
the
“Safety
Notices”
on
page
xi.
This
system
supports
hot-swap
and
redundant
cooling.
The
system
electronics
are
cooled
with
three
system
cooling
fans.
Note:
Each
fan
unit
has
two
LEDs
on
the
top
cover.
The
green
LED
indicates
the
fan
is
operating
properly.
The
amber
LED
indicates
a
fan
failure.
Attention:
The
Linux
operating
system
does
not
support
these
hot-pluggable
procedures.
A
system
with
Linux
installed
must
be
shut
down
and
powered
off
before
removing
or
replacing
a
fan.
Removing
a
Hot-Swap
System
Fan
To
remove
a
hot-swap
system
fan,
do
the
following:
1.
Place
the
system
into
the
service
position
as
described
in
“Placing
the
Model
6C3
into
the
Service
Position”
on
page
284
or
“Placing
the
Model
6E3
into
the
Service
and
Operating
Position”
on
page
286.
2.
Remove
the
service
access
cover
as
described
in
“Removing
the
Model
6C3
Service
Access
Cover”
on
page
288,
or
“Removing
the
Model
6E3
Service
Access
Cover”
on
page
289
3.
Locate
the
system
fans,
as
shown
in
the
following
illustration.
4.
Pull
on
the
orange
locking
knob
of
the
failing
fan
until
you
feel
it
unlock.
5.
Press
and
hold
the
plastic
tab
attached
to
the
fan
tray
away
from
the
system
fan.
6.
Pull
on
the
locking
knob
of
the
failing
fan
again
until
you
feel
the
fan
pull
away
from
its
connector.
7.
Lift
the
failing
fan
unit
out
of
the
fan
tray.
