220 IBM System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 Planning and Implementation Guide
Reliability, availability, serviceability (RAS)
Upward Integration Module (UIM) now has upward integration with RAS events. UIM
undergoes the following procedure when a RAS event is detected on a server:
1. A RAS event is detected on the server (Figure 7-28). and is reported up the chain to either
Microsoft System Center, VMware vCenter, Director, or a Flex System Manager (FSM,
Flex System Enterprise Chassis only).
Figure 7-28 RAS event reports up the chain
2. The server is evacuated and the workload resumes on a different server (Figure 7-29).
Figure 7-29 Workload resumes on a different server
3. The failed server is taken off line, ready for maintenance.
Additional resilience in the X6 design simplifies management of the server. The next section
discusses the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) X6 employs to assist in recovery from
errors that are not correctable at the hardware level, simplifying the management of your
server.
