1.5 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The Model 40
Series
is
self-contained
and
requires
no
operator
inter-
vention
during
operation.
The
drive
consists
of
a
media-rotating
system,
a
head-load
and
positioning
system,
and a
write/erase
and
read
system.
The
MPI
Model 40
Series
storage
drives
read
and
write
in
single
or
double
density
on
standard
diskettes.
The
MPI
Model 41
provides
storage
on
one
side
of
standard
diskette
or
on
both
sides
if
the
"flippy"
option
is
requested
by
the
customer.
The
MPI
Model 42
provides
for
information
storage
on
both
sides
of
standard
two-sided
diskettes.
The
only
difference
between
these
two
units
is
the
number
of
heads
in
the
disk
drive
and
storage
capacity.
The
logic
PCB
is
identical
in
all
models.
When
the
front
door
is
opened,
access
is
provided
for
the
insertion
of
a
diskette.
The
diskette
is
accurately
positioned
by
chassis
guides,
the
front
latch
inhibitor,
and
by
the
backstop.
Closing
the
front
door
activates
the
cone/clutch
system,
resulting
in
centering
of
the
diskette
and
clamping
it
to
the
spindle
hub.
The
spindle
hub
is
driven
at
a
constant
speed
of
360
RPM
by a
servo-controlled
DC
motor.
When
the
drive
is
in
operation,
it
is
important
that
the
head-to-media
rela-
tionship
be
controlled.
This
is
accomplished
by
the
head-load
system
in
the
following
way:
When
the
door
is
closed
the
media
is
pressed
against
the
lower
head;
the
Index
sensor
is
referenced
to
the
head
and
the
spindle
hub;
and
the
upper
head
in
the
Model 42
drive,
or
the
felt
pad
in
the
Model
41
drive,
is
loaded
against
the
media
on
the
opposite
side
of
the
head
with
a
force
of
approximately
20
grams.
The
recording
head(s)
is
positioned
over
the
correct
track
by means
of
a
four-phase
stepper
motor/band
mechanism, and
its
associated
electronics.
A
one-step
movement
causes
a
one-track
movement.
With
band
positioning,
very
high
step
rates
can
be
accomplished
with
the
Model 40
Series
system.
