'CAUTION: Before going down a steep
or long grade, reduce speed and shift the
transmission into a lower gear or lower
range to control car speed. Try not to
hold the brake pedal down too long or
too
often. This could cause the brakes
to get
hot
and not work
as
well.
Forced Downshift-When you want
quick
powerot
acceleration
to
pass
moving vehicles or
to
climb steep grades
at speeds between about
35
and
65
mph
(60 and 100 km/h), the transmission
can
be
downshifted
by
pushing the
accelerator
. pedal completely
to
the
floor.
It
is
also possible
to
obtain a
forced downshift
in
''DRNE''
range
at
speeds under
35
mph (60 km/h)
by
pushing the accelerator pedal
part
way
down.
HOLDING
CAR
ON
AN
UPGRADE
When
stopped on an upgrade, keep your
position by applying the brakes.

·
TRANSMISSION
THREE-SPEED
The
manual transmission shift positions
follow the standard patterns shown in the
illustrations. The
3-speed, 4-speed and
5-speed transmission shift levers, extending
from the
flo
or ,have shift pattern diagrams
on
the knob. Push in the clutch pedal fully
before trying to shift
to
a different gear,
then release the pedal
to
move in that gear.
For recommended acceleration shift speeds
and
gear
cruising ranges, refer
to
the chart.
For good fuel economy
we
recommend
smooth and
even
acceleration.
Very
fast,
racy driving, alternating between full
throttle
and
hard braking, raises the fuel
consumption considerably. Also, tires and
brake linings
wear
faster.
Operating Cautions:
1.
Do
not "speed shift";
allow
time
2
FOUR-SPEED
FIVE-SPEED
between shifts for the transmission
synchronizers
to
coordinate.
2.
Do
not
use
second or third gear
to
accelerate from a stop.
3. Always place
gear
shift
in
"Neutral"
and apply the brakes when starting the
engine.
4.
Never
leave
car unattended with engine
running.
5. Always set
~rking
brake firmly before
leaving
the car. .
6.
Do
not coast
in
"Neutral" (illegal in
many states).
7.
Never
"ride" the clutch pedal
as
