STOWAGE
OF
TIRE
AND
JACK
CAUTION: Always securely restow the
spare
tire
assembly, all jacking
equipment, and any
covers or doors,
using· the means provided. This
will help
keep such items from being thrown
about and injuring people in the car in
an accident.
Before stowing the tire, be sure
to
clean
the tire well
of
anything that would
keep the tire from resting on the
bottom
of
the well. To stow the jack,
place lever in
''UP'' and move the
handle back and forth until the column
is
secure
in
the
receiver (see
illustration).
If
these steps are not
taken, the tire
or
jack may push against
the trunk lid
so
that the trunk lid
cannot seal tightly. This may allow
carbon monoxide from the
. exhaust
system to ·get inside the car through the
trunk. (See Engine Exhaust
Gas
Caution
in
"Starting and Operating" section.)
STOWAWAY
SPARE
TIRE
If your car has a stowaway spare tire, your
spare provides you with more usable
storage
space
since
it
is
stored deflated. A
tread life of
1,000 to 3,000 miles
(1
600 to
4
800
kilometres) can be expected,
depending on road conditions
and
your
driving habits.
To
conserve tread life, the
spare should be returned
to
the trunk
as
soon
as
the standard tire can be repaired or
replaced. Continuous
use
at speeds
over
50
mph (80 km/h)
is
not recommended.
A pressurized tire inflator (canister) has
been provided with your stowaway spare
tire. The inflator contains
CO
2 (carbon
dioxide) and
is
stored in a blue canister
which
is
refillable after use. Contact your
Oldsmobile dealer
or
an authorized fire
extinguisher
service
facility for a refill.
INF
LATION
WITH
APPROVED
INFLATOR
1. Before changing tire, read the caution
and directions that appear on
both
the
tire inflator and on the stowaway spare.
2. Install deflated spare on
car
axle with
wIve
stem at the bottom and slightly
tighten all
lug
nuts.
3.
Place tire inflator over stem of tire
inflation
valve.
Push squarely onto stem
until
gas
can
be heard entering the tire.
(Tire may move slightly toward or away
from you when expanding. This
is
normal.)
4. After sound
of
gas
entering tire stops,
remove tire inflator and
replace
valve
cap. Lower
car
and fully tighten
lug
nuts per jacking instructions in this
manual.
NOTICE:
When
first filled or after the
car
has been standing for a long time (particularly
in
cold weather), the tire may not appear
fully inflated. In this
case,
drive slowly for the
first mile/k170metre; this should increase the
pressure
in
the tire.
If
not, follow instructions
in
Step 5 immediately.
5. Adjust tire inflation pressure
to
the
pressure shown on the Tire
Placard
