(a)
Shift
at
maximum
car speed listed unless cruising speed has been reached.
For
cruise, select
the
highest gear for
that
speed (cruising speed
is
defined as a relatively
constant
speed
operation
that
includes steady speed
operation
as well
as
moderate
variations
in
speed
consistent
with
road
and
traff
ic conditions). This may require skippi
ng
one
or
more gears for
the
transit
ion
from
an
acceleration
to
cruise. For example, when accelerating
to
a
25
mph
(40
km/h)
cruise, a second gear
to
fourth
gear (to fifth gear
if
so equipped) shift would be
appropriate
at
25
mph
(40
km/h)
.
(b) Fifth gear
is
recommended
for use
in
maintaining
extended
highway cruising speeds.
Use
of
fifth
gear
in
city
traffic
is
not
recommended.
(c)
Use
third
gear
at
slow speeds (less
than
30
mph;
48
km/h)
when
driving in
"stop
and
go"
traffic.
NOTICE :
If
car speed
is
reduced below
20
mph (32
km/h),
or
if
the
engine
is
obviously lugging,
the
transmission should be
downshifted
from
hi
gh
gear
to
the
next
lowest gear. Downshifting
two
or
more
gear positions may be necessary
to
prevent lugging
the
engine
orlo
provide a satisfactory performance
level.
21
will cause excessive slippage with
resultant wear on the clutch parts.
CAUTION:
Use
caution when speeding
up, or when shifting into lower gear, on
slippery surfaces with car moving.
Sudden acceleration or engine braking
action due
to
shifting
to
a lower gear
could cause the rear wheels
to
skid. This
could lead to loss
of
car control.
