CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS
low to engage the gear. In this situation, the
transmission ECU will slightly increase engine
rpm. DOWN arrows indicate the input shaft rpm
is too high to engage the gear, the ECU is
waiting for the shaft to slow down before
allowing the shift.
OPERATION
Always place the transmission in neural (N)
when starting and stopping the engine.
Caution: Never coast with the transmission in
neutral position.
To inhibit upshifts during downhill driving and for
optimal engine braking while operating in the
desired gear, select low (L) on the control pad.
There will be no further upshifts, except to
protect the engine from overspeeding. The shift
control can be operated at any speed.
For manual control of shifts, select hold (H)
mode on the control pad and use the up and
down arrows to change gears. Use this mode
when driving over railroad tracks and while on
steep grades. To return to normal driving, select
D. The best gear for the conditions will be
automatically selected.
When Cruise Control is engaged, the
transmission shifts automatically. No driver
intervention is necessary.
If the engine brake (JACOBS brake) is active, it
will be disabled automatically during a shift, then
enabled when the shift is complete.
Note: The transmission may activate the engine
brake to aid in its operation. This can happen
even if the engine brake is not activated by the
switch on the dashboard.
There is a speed limit on reverse engagements.
The driver can still rock the vehicle by switching
from reverse (R) to drive (D) and back.
Auto Neutral
Some applications requires the system to
prohibit any gear selection from neutral (N), as
when using a wheelchair lift for example. In that
case, gear selection is disabled when the
application is active. On the other hand, if the
transmission is not in neutral, the application
cannot be activated.
Setting Start Gear
The default starting gear can be changed. This
change is only active while the engine is running
(resets on shut-off) or until another default gear
is set.
1. To set a default starting gear, set D or H
while stopped;
2. Use the up or down arrow on the control pad
to chose the starting gear.
Driving in “D” (Drive) Mode
Drive mode (D) is used for normal driving
conditions.
Driving in “H” (Hold) Mode
When driving in the hold (H) mode, the driver
must control shifts with the up and down arrows
on the shift control pad.
1. Select “H” on the control pad;
2. To upshift, press the UP arrow, to downshift,
press the DOWN arrow (skip a gear by
pressing twice);
3. Transmission automatically shifts to the next
gear.
Driving in “L” (Low) Mode
Low mode automatically completes downshifts
at the earliest opportunity.
Note: The shift control buttons can be selected
between drive, hold and low modes as desired
while the vehicle is moving forward.
ALLISON TRANSMISSION
The transmission is fully automatic: Proper
ranges should be automatically selected
according to driving speeds to improve vehicle
performance and control. The speed ratio of the
power converter changes automatically as
vehicle speed increases and direct-drive goes in
and out as necessary, The speed ratio is
modulated by vehicle speed and accelerator
pedal position.
OPERATION
When a button is depressed on the transmission
control pad, the corresponding letter or number
is displayed indicating the transmission is ready
to operate in the selected range. If the
electronic control system detects a serious
