Planning the Installation of Options
Before installing the server options into the server chassis, you should review these
topics:
“Before You Begin” on page 18
“Avoid Electrostatic Discharge” on page 18
“Run Server Diagnostics” on page 19
“About Server Component Filler Panels” on page 19
Before You Begin
Before you begin the installation of the options, you should have:
Reviewed Chapter 1 of this document.
Located the shipping packaging that contains the options that you are about to
install into the server.
Avoid Electrostatic Discharge
Internal modules and options are electronic components that are extremely sensitive
to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static from your clothes or work
environment can destroy components.
To prevent static damage whenever you are accessing any of the internal server
components, you must:
Use an antistatic wrist strap. Attach this wrist strap to your wrist and ground the
other end of strap to the system chassis (sheet metal). For additional information,
see the instructions that are shipped with the strap.
Place static sensitive components such as memory modules, hard drives, CPUs,
PCIe cards and other server components on an antistatic surface. The following
items can be used as an antistatic surface:
The bag used to ship the component.
Sun Electronic Discharge (ESD) mat, Sun part number 250-1088 (available
through your Sun Sales representative).
