Appendix A: Glossary
Temporary inability to breath.
The collapse or closure of a lung resulting in reduced or absent gas
exchange.
The continuous flow of gas responsible for replenishing oxygen and
removing carbon dioxide (CO
2
) from the patient circuit.
Time triggered, time cycled pressure SIPPVs at two separate pressure
levels.
Breaths-per-minute (applies to each spontaneous, triggered and
mandatory).
A digit representing the sum of the correct digits in a piece of stored or
transmitted digital data, against which later comparisons can be made
to detect errors in the data.
Communication interface with system.
Any of a group of steroid hormones produced in the adrenal cortex or
made synthetically. There are two kinds: glucocorticoids and
mineralocorticoids. They have various metabolic functions, and some
are used to treat inflammation.
Can occur due to the following respiratory episodes:
• Low tidal volume (TV) ventilation
• Inadequate positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)
• Use of high FiO
2
(absorption atelectasis)
Digital Input / Output interface. Relay digital signals from sensors,
transducers, and mechanical equipment to other electrical circuits and
devices.
Fraction of Inspired Oxygen. A fraction of oxygen in the volume being
measured.
Ferroelectric Random-Access Memory.
Patient attachment for delivering CPAP, used with nasal prongs and
mask.
Ingress Protection rating.
Infrared radiation [
wavelength about 700 nanometres
(nm)].
Leakage from patient or system tubings ∕ connections.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Magnetic Resonance Therapy.
