Replacement procedures
Capillary column installation
With the FPD capillary adapter installed, fused silica columns as large as
530 µm ID may be installed up through the FPD Fused Silica Insert to the
base of the flame as follows:
1. Install a column nut and graphite ferrule on the column.
2. Cut off a short piece of the column end.
3. Position the column so it extends about 153 mm from the end of the
ferrule. (The optimum height may be higher or lower, depending on
sample type and detector flow rates. If the column is too high, it can be
exposed to the detector flame. If the column is too low, the sample may
be exposed to hot stainless steel which can result in slight peak tailing.)
Mark the column at a point even with the bottom of the nut. White
typewriter correction fluid makes a good marking material. See
Figure 350-2 for details.
4. Install the column in the GC and detector.
