Managing Cable Connections to Adapter Cards
All cable connections to adapter cards are made from the front of the 7705 SAR-8. The
adapter cards can be connected using Ethernet, copper, or fiber-optic cables. A distribution
panel is needed to make coaxial cable connections. Refer to the appropriate adapter card
installation guide for details on connecting to a specific adapter card.
Warnings and Notes
Notes:
• Alcatel-Lucent recommends leaving at least 1 RU of space above and/or below the
7705 SAR-8 to run cables from the faceplate connectors. It is not necessary for the space
to be immediately above or below the 7705 SAR-8.
• Ensure cables are dressed such that they do not impede the insertion or removal of field-
replaceable units (FRUs), such as CSMs, adapter cards, and the Fan module.
• Ensure cables are dressed such that they do not impede viewing the LEDs on the Fan
module.
• Typically, cables are routed between the rack uprights.
• To maintain EMC compliance, cables that are shielded and grounded at both ends must
be used with the adapter card interfaces.
• To meet surge protection requirements, the cable shield must be grounded by attaching
the shield to a convenient chassis ground point, using hardware suitable to provide a
solid electrical and mechanical connection. In addition, ensure that there is sufficient
strain relief to remove any mechanical strain on the ground connection due to cable
movement.
Danger: Only trained and qualified personnel should install or replace this equipment.
Warnings:
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if CSMs or adapter cards are
mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap connected to a nearby
ground point that is connected to a site grounding point (typically, the grounding stud on
the 7705 SAR-8, or a properly grounded rack or work bench).
• Invisible laser radiation can be emitted from the adapter card aperture ports when no
cable is connected. Avoid exposure and do not stare into open apertures.
• Do not power up a 7705 SAR-8 before verifying that all common equipment (chassis,
power, cooling, and grounding) is connected properly and that the fan module and all
cards in the chassis have the same voltage type.
• Use only approved small form-factor pluggable (SFP) fiber-optic devices in adapter card
ports.
