4. Principle of Operation
4.1 General
An explanation of the circuits in the CSW5550 is given in this section. Refer to Figure 5-1 for a
block diagram/ schematic and interconnect of the system.

4.2 Overall Description
Three or single phase input power is routed in from the back panel through an EMI filter and the
circuit breaker to the PFC-DC/DC module. The DC outputs from the DC/DC converter is used
for the Output Power Amplifier and all supplemental circuits.
The Controller assembly generates the reference waveforms and provides frequency, amplitude
and phase control. The Analog Board assembly is an interface to and from the controller for all
input and outputs. The assemblies are described in more detail in the following paragraphs.
Refer to Figure 5-1 for an overall block diagram and System Interconnect.
4.3 Controller (A2) (7006-714)
The Controller assembly, A2, consists of one printed circuit board assembly connected by a
ribbon cable. The Controller generates the waveform signal setting the frequency, amplitude
and current limit level. It also senses the output voltage to provide closed loop control of the
output.
In addition to the waveform generator the controller board assembly contains components for
the CPU (DSP), generating the Phase waveform signals to the power amplifiers and all of the
program, waveform and data memory. In addition, the Controller contains the circuits for all
measurements. The clock and lock circuit required to support the clock and lock mode of
operation of multiple CSW units is also on this board assembly. If the -413 option is present, a
separate inter harmonic generator board is connected to the Controller board.
4.4 Keyboard/Display Board (A1) (7006-716)
The keyboard/display assembly is assembly A9. It is mounted to the front panel and holds the
23 rubber keys. It also has the LCD graphics display. A shaft encoder is mounted on the board
that is used for a shuttle input.
4.5 Remote Interface (A7) (7006-715)
This board assembly is identified as A7. It has the IEEE 488, RS232 and USB transceivers and
optionally an Ethernet interface (-LAN option). It also has isolators to provide safety isolation for
all control interfaces. It also has a power supply that supplies isolated +5 and +3.3 supplies for
all of the Remote Interface circuits.
