General Maintenance and Troubleshooting
SM 6495, Rev. 7, December 2008 3-9
To replace the main shaft and segment gear, perform the removal procedures in reverse order. Use
Loctite 242 (Blue) on segment gear set screw and torque to 48 ft-lbs. Lubricate gear teeth with a light
grease. Sealed bearings should be replaced when main shaft is replaced.
3.2.9. Power Down of the Gate Arm
There are two procedures to power down the gate arm. If the maintenance switch (Figure 3-2) is
installed, use the procedure in Section 3.2.9.1; if the maintenance switch is not installed use the
procedure in Section 3.2.9.2.
US&S has been installing the maintenance switch as part of the standard gate mechanism. If your gate
mechanism does not have one installed, a Maintenance Switch Upgrade kit is available for installation
from US&S as part number N461092-02.
3.2.9.1. With the Maintenance Switch Installed
If it becomes necessary to replace the gate arm on the mechanism, use the following procedure. Note
that due to long cable lengths from the batteries and/or weak batteries, it may be necessary to remove
some of the counterweights so that the mechanism will drive completely to the gate down position.
1. Loosen the gold nut on terminal 5B (refer to Figure 3-2 for terminal location).
WARNING
Keep fingers and hands clear of gears and electrical connections when
inserting hold down pin (M46706901 in Model 95 Tool Kit) into gear,
otherwise personal injury may result.
2. Toggle the maintenance switch to the MAINTENANCE position. Press and hold the push button
switch to drive the gate mechanism to the down position. Immediately insert the hold down pin
(M46706901 in tool kit N46707001 furnished with each mechanism) into an appropriate opening
in the large idler gear as the gate mechanism approaches the down position. If the hold down pin is
not inserted into the idler gear prior to the segment gear contacting the gear shock assembly, jog
the push button switch to allow insertion of the pin.
CAUTION
Do not hold the Maintenance Switch down longer than 60 seconds if the
hold down pin is not inserted prior to the segment gear contacting the
gear shock assembly; otherwise motor damage may occur.
