IV.1 Quick Start
TheDV3TRheometerusesthesamemethodologyforyieldmeasurementsastheBrookeldYR-1
andDV-IIIUltraRheometers.IfyouhaveexperiencewithotherBrookeldequipment,thissection
willgiveyouquicksteps for makingayieldmeasurement.IfyouhavenotusedaBrookeld
Rheometerbefore,skipthissectionandgotoSectionIV.2foradetaileddescription.
A) AssembleandleveltheDV3TRheometer(SectionI.4).
B) Turnpoweron.
C) Autozerotherheometer(SectionII.2).
D) TheDV3TwilldisplaytheCongureViscosityTestScreen.PresstheHomeIconin
theNavigationBar.FromtheHomeMenu,selectCongureYieldTest.
E) Select:Spindle,ImmersionMark,andRunSpeed.
F) AttachthevanespindletotheDV3T.
NOTE: Left-hand thread. IfequippedwithEZ-Lock,usetheappropriateprocedure
toconnectthespindle(seeSectionIII.3).Immersethespindlegentlyintothetest
samplebyloweringtheDV3TontheModelGlaboratorystand.
G) PresstheRunbutton.ThescreenwillchangetotheRunningYieldTestScreen.
H) WhentheYieldTestis complete, theDV3Twill present theYieldTestComplete
screen.RecordtheStress(yieldstress),Torque,andTemperature.
I) Torunanothertest,pressCongureTest.ToreturntotheHomeMenu,pressthe
Home Icon.
IV.2 Preparations for Making Measurements
A) RHEOMETER:TheDV3Tshouldbeturnedon,leveledandautozeroed.Thelevelisadjusted
usingthetwofeetonthebottomofthebaseandconrmedusingthebubblelevelonthefront
ofthehead.Adjustthefeetuntilthebubbleisinsidethecentertarget.Setthelevelpriorto
autozeroandcheckthelevelpriortoeachmeasurement.
The proper level is essential for correct operation of the DV3T.
B) Sample:Themeasuredyieldvalueisverydependentonhowthesampleishandledpriortothe
measurement.Thesampleshouldbedisturbedaslittleaspossiblepriortoinsertingthevane
spindle.Brookeldrecommendstestingthesampleinthecontainerinwhichitisprovidedwhen
possible.Ifitisnecessarytotransferthesampletoanewcontainer,thenitisrecommendedto
includeapre-shearand/orwaittimeintheYieldTest.Thispre-shearandwait-timewillprovide
acommonhistorytoeachsampletoaidinsampletosamplecomparison.
Brookeldrecommendstheuseofvanespindlesformeasuringyieldvalue.Thevanespindle
providesauniquegeometrythatminimizesdisturbanceofthesampleduringspindleinsertion.
Many samplesmust be controlled to a specic temperaturefor yield measurement. When
conditioningasamplefortemperature,besuretotemperaturecontrolthecontainerandspindle
aswellasthesample.
