PROPELLER SHAFT MEASUREMENT
To accurately check drive line alignment, raise and
support the vehicle. Allow the wheels and propeller
shaft to turn. An alignment rack can also be used for
this check. Use inclinometer 7663 to make propeller
shaft measurement.
(1) Rotate the shaft until transmission yoke bear-
ing cap is in exact vertical position (facing down-
ward) (Fig. 4).
(2) Place the inclinometer on yoke bearing cap (A)
parallel to the shaft (Fig. 5). Adjust bubble to center
of sight glass and record reading.
(3) Place inclinometer on yoke bearing cap (B) par-
allel to the shaft (Fig. 6). Adjust bubble to center of
sight glass and record reading.
(4) The difference in inclinometer readings indi-
cates the amount of yoke misalignment. The verti-
cal alignment of shaft yokes should be kept
within 1.5 degrees of each other.
REMOVAL
(1) Raise and support the vehicle.
(2) Remove exhaust heat shield bolts from the
belly pan.
(3) Remove belly pan bolts and pan (Fig. 7).
(4) Mark propeller shaft and pinion yoke (Fig. 8)
for installtion reference.
(5) Remove universal joint bolts and straps (Fig. 9)
at rear of propeller shaft.
(6) Slide propeller shaft yoke out of the transmis-
sion.
INSTALLATION
(1) Slide front yoke into transmission and align
yoke reference marks.
(2) Install new universal joint straps and bolts.
Then tighten bolts to 38 N·m (28 ft. lbs.).
CAUTION: Propeller shaft strap bolts incorporate a
LoctiteT patch. The bolts must be replaced or
cleaned and LoctiteT 242 thread locker applied
whenever removed.
