(4) Wait two minutes for the airbag system reserve
capacitor to discharge before beginning any airbag
system or instrument panel component service.
(5) Remove six allen screws to shifter bezel.
(6) Remove shifter shaft with knob and body.
(7) Remove floor console bezel and parking brake
body.
(8) Remove eight screws and disconnect one elec-
trical connector to center console and remove console
from vehicle.
(9) From underneath console, remove three retain-
ing screws to the passenger airbag ON/OFF switch
and remove from center console.
INSTALLATION
(1) Reach underneath console, place passenger air-
bag ON/OFF switch into position and install the
three retaining screws.
(2) Place center console into position in vehicle,
connect one electrical connector and install eight
screws.
(3) Install parking brake body and floor console
bezel.
(4) Install shifter shaft with knob and body.
(5) Install six allen screws to shifter bezel.
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE
CABLE (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - AIRBAG SYSTEM).
(6) Place battery access cover into place and install
four bolts.
(7) Close deck lid.
(8) Verify vehicle and system operation.
SEAT BELT & RETRACTOR
REMOVAL
(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment
cover and remove cover.
(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(4) Wait two minutes for the airbag system reserve
capacitor to discharge before beginning any airbag
system or instrument panel component service.
(5) Fold convertible top down.
(6) Adjust seat to the farthest forward position.
(7) Remove lower seat belt anchor bolt.
(8) Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or
equivalent, gently pry up on the sill plate and
remove from vehicle.
(9) Using a trim stick or equivalent, pry out rub-
ber plugs at sport hoop.
(10) Remove the two bolts attaching the sport hoop
to rear bulkhead.
(11) Remove sport hoop from vehicle.
(12) Remove three screws retaining the rear bulk-
head panel. One screw located at console and two
screws located at door edge.
(13) Pull edge of panel out far enough to place a
block (2 X 4) between it and the rear bulkhead.
(14) Move carpet out of the way to access seat belt
and retractor.
(15) Disconnect the electrical connector at the
retractor assembly.
(16) Remove two bolts to seat belt retractor.
(17) Fish seat belt through guides and remove.
(18) Remove seat belt and retractor assembly from
vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Place seat belt and retractor assembly into
position.
(2) Fish seat belt through guides.
(3) Install two bolts to seat belt retractor. Torque
bolts to 40 N·m (30 ft. lbs.).
(4) Connect the electrical connector at the seat belt
retractor.
(5) Replace carpet that was moved aside to access
the seat belt and retractor.
(6) Pull block (2 X 4) out from in between bulk-
head and rear bulkhead panel.
(7) Install the three screws retaining the rear
bulkhead panel. One screw located at console and
two screws located at door edge.
(8) Place sport hoop in position in vehicle. Install
the two retaining bolts to sport hoop. Torque bolts to
28 N·m (21 ft. lbs.).
(9) Install the two rubber plugs at sport hoop.
(10) Place the sill plate into position on the retain-
ing slots and firmly snap into place.
(11) Install the lower seat belt anchor bolt. Torque
bolt to 40 N·m (30 ft. lbs.).
(12) Readjust seat to the previous customer posi-
tion.
(13) Put convertible top up.
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE
CABLE (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - AIRBAG SYSTEM).
(14) Place battery access cover into place and
install four bolts.
(15) Close deck lid.
(16) Verify vehicle and system operation.
