Troubleshooting

Printer is not printing
Check the print signal is connected and providing a print trigger. Use the
system diagnostics screen to monitor the print signal
Check the ink ribbon is installed correctly. SmartDate X65 uses inside
wound ribbon
Continuous mode only:
Check the encoder is connected and providing a valid signal. Use the
system diagnostics screen to monitor the encoder speed
Ribbon Breaking
Check the printhead gap, making sure there is no cotact between the
printhead and print roller/platen. Adjust if necessary
Make sure the substrate speed is stable. Use the system diagnostics
screen to monitor the encoder speed
Intermittent mode only:
Make sure the substrate is stable before the print begins and does not
move until the print is completed. Use the ‘Print Delay’ setting to allow
for the substrate to settle before it begins to print. Increase the host
machine’s dwell time to allow for the print to be completed before the
substrate is moved. If increasing the dwell time is not possible, increase
the print speed.
Ribbon coning (Ribbon
does not track correctly on
the ribbon waste spool)
Check alignment of the printer relative to the print roller/platen. The print
roller/platen and the printhead should be parallel.
Print missing target area
Continuous mode only:
Check the encoder is tracking correctly. Use the system diagnostics
screen to monitor the encoder speed
Intermittent mode only:
Check the printhead carriage is returning to its home position after every
print. Make sure the substrate is stable before the print begins and does
not move until the print is completed. Use the ‘Print Delay’ setting to
allow for the substrate to settle before it begins to print. Increase the
host machine’s dwell time to allow for the print to be completed before
the substrate is moved. If increasing the dwell time is not possible,
increase the print speed.
Print quality
Problem Possible Cause and Action
Cropped print
Check the ribbon width is wider than the image width: replace with
wider ribbon if necessary.
Check if too much ‘offset’ has been applied and reduce if necessary.
Reposition the printer on the bracket if the print is not in the target area
on the substrate.
