Cleaning and Care
To maintain optimal printer performance and maximise component life, the SmartDate printer
should be inspected at regular intervals. The frequency of inspection will depend on the
application and installation environment. The following is recommended.
Maintenance Scheme
Quick/Regular Checks and Actions
• Clean the printhead with an isopropanol wipe after each ribbon use
• Check that the ribbon is tracking through the cassette correctly. Pull the ribbon through by
hand, and visually check to see if the ribbon is creasing across the width of the ribbon
• Check the peel roller for any ink build up and clean if necessary. Use isopropanol wipes
• Check that darkness/speed settings are appropriate for the application. Darkness settings
in excess of 120% may reduce the life of the printhead
• Check the air supply is set to recommended pressure
• Check condition of the platen rubber (intermittent printing) or print roller (continuous
printing) and clean or replace it if necessary
• Remove the ribbon cassette and clean inside the printer body if necessary. DO NOT use
water to clean the unit; isopropanol cleaning wipes can be used for this purpose
Monthly Checks
• Check condition of peel roller and inspect internally for wear and replace it if necessary
• Check condition of the ribbon guide rollers and that the bearings run smoothly
• Check condition of ribbon sensor roller. Inspect the roller coating for wear or damage
• Ensure all rollers are aligned correctly with the cassette plate
• Check the magnet for any damage or non-alignment
• Print a test image to check printhead quality and alignment
• Check condition of printhead carriage drive belt and associated components, pulleys,
bearings, retainers and shafts
• Inspect the air cylinder for leaks, use the printer’s manual contols to move the printhead to
the printhead position
• Check that the tension roller slide runs freely
