Glossary
Pollution degree
The pollution degree defines the environmental conditions of a switching device. If the switching device is
installed in a enclosure, the environmental conditions inside the enclosure apply.
The pollution degree in accordance with EN 61439 refers to the environmental conditions intended for the
switching device combination.
The four defined degrees of contamination serve to assess the clearances and creepage distances
in the microenvironment. Pollution degree 3 is defined as a conductive contamination or a dry, non-
conductive contamination which could become conductive if in contact with dew.
Pollution degree 2 is defined as slight contamination where temporary conductivity due to contact with
dew can be expected.
