The metal cutting option is required to cut metal. This option, if ordered, is installed at the factory at
the time of purchase. Oxygen assist through the high pressure optics is needed to initiate the cut
and obtain a clean edge. This oxygen is controlled by the KCAM software and KLMC box.
150 and 200 watt lasers can be equipped with a metal cutting option. This option allows the machine
to cut up to .090″ mild steel .075″ stainless steel.
Trying to cut or engrave more reflective metals (Aluminum, Brass, Copper, etc.) will void all
warranty on the laser and laser system.
Focusing the Optics
The metal cutting optics will come already focused from our factory. Cut into a piece of paper on a
piece of wood at 10% power at a speed of 1 IPS. Follow these steps:
6. Turn off the Height Follower Switch.
7. Lower the focusing handle so the tip is .020” from to the wood or paper material.
8. Make sure you are cutting with shop air and NOT oxygen when setting the focus height.
9. Cut into the material and turn the focusing twist handle up or down until you have the narrowest
line in the material.
10. When you are cutting with the narrowest line width this is when the focus height is set.
11. If your narrowest line is at .020” you are in focus.
Adjusting the lens to get back into focus:
13. Remove your metal cutting optics from the laser system.
14. With your lens removal tool unscrew the first black plastic screw.
15. Gently remove the lens from the assembly, place on a clean cloth.
16. Remove the O-Ring.
17. Adjust the bottom black plastic screw up or down depending on where you need to get in focus.
18. Place the plastic O-ring back into the optics.
19. Gently place the lens back into the optics.
20. Screw the top plastic screw back into the optics and gently snug to the lens.
21. Cut the file again and verify that the narrowest cut is now at .020” from the material.
22. Readjust bottom black plastic screw if needed.
Setting the Focus Height
To set the focus height you will need a sheet of metal. Make sure that the Height Follower is
positioned between the up and down limit switches. Turn on your Height Follower and it should
automatically move up till it hits the top limit switch. If it continues to move up and starts to make a
grinding noise, your height follower needs turned off and then lowered so that it is positioned below
the top limit switch.
Make sure that the Height Follower is now on and open up the Manual Screen in KCAM. Press the H.
Follower button and the optics should begin move down to the metal piece. Adjust the knob on the
Height Follower so that you are .020” off of the metal. The Focus Height is now set and you are
ready to being metal cutting.
How to Cut Mild or Stainless Steel
The following process may be used to cut mild and stainless steel with your laser system if you have
the metal cutting option installed.
1. Remove the aluminum honeycomb and aluminum Ecolite from the table top and replace with the
metal cutting grid work.
