2. Disconnect the airline from the back of the laser table. Connect an oxygen source to the
removed airline connection.
3. Remove the laser nozzle and replace with the metal cutting nozzle with the ceramic isolator.
4. Do not install the top vacuum to the laser nozzle. This will interfere with the height follower
sensor and could also be a fire hazard as sparks could ignite the plastic casing and hosing.
5. Connect the sensor wire from the Height Follower sensor to the optics lens assembly.
6. Hook up the optics air to the nozzle.
7. Turn ON the red Height Follower switch.
8. Open KCAM and select the left Open icon and located the deer file.
C:\Program Files\Kern\Samples\Deer.plt, and open it.
9. When ready to cut click the Cut button.
10. Set your speeds and powers in the Settings Menu and verify that the cut vector option is
checked.
11. Set a Height Follower Delay In the Vector Settings Tab to allow time for the Height Follower to
drop down into focus.
12. When you are ready to cut click Continue and the laser will move out to the file location and then
pause.
13. Click Continue once again and the nozzle will lower to the metal and stop .020” away and start
cutting.
14. Once the deer is cut out the Height Follower will move back up to its up position and then return
home.
15. Make sure to close your oxygen source once you are done metal cutting and replace with regular
shop air.
Metal Cutting Optics Assembly
Metal Cutting Optics
Capacitance Sensor: Senses the capacitance
from the end of the isolated cutting tip to the
metal being cut. This information is fed into a
Kern Height Follower Controller. The gap from the
metal being cut and the cutting tip can be
adjusted until a desired gap is obtained. The Kern
Height Follower will then maintain that gap over
the metal even if the metal has any distortion in
the metal and maintain the proper focusing point.
Height Follower Wire: Connects the capacitance
sensor to the cutting tip.
Optics Air: Oxygen assist shoots down the laser
optics making metal cutting possible.
Metal Cutting Nozzle: A brass nozzle.
