AntilockBrakeSystem(ABS)
Whentravellingathighspeedorthereisa
dangerofaquaplaning,i.e.wherealayerof
waterpreventsadequatecontactbetween
thetyresandtheroadsurface,ABS
cannotovercomethephysicallimitations
ofstoppingthecarinashortdistance.In
thesecases,itistheresponsibilityofthe
drivertomaintainasafedistancefrom
othervehicles.
DONOTpumpthebrakepedalatany
time,thiswillinterrupttheoperationof
ABSandmayincreasethebrakingdistance.
TheABSismainlyusedtoautomaticallyadjustthebraking
forceofeachbrakewhenbrakingtopreventthewheels
frombeinglocked,thusavoidingdangeroussituationssuch
aslossofdirectionorsideslipduringemergencybraking.
Thissystemenablesthedrivertomaintaincontroloverthe
steeringincaseofemergencybraking,keepsthevehicle
stable,andimprovesthesafetyfactor.
Undernormalbrakingconditions,ABSwillnotbe
activated.However,ifthebrakingforceexceedsthe
adhesionbetweenthetyresandtheroadsurface,causing
thewheelstolock,theABSwillautomaticallycomeinto
operation.Thiswillberecognisablebyarapidpulsation
feltthroughthebrakepedal.
Ifemergencybrakingisrequired,thedrivershouldapply
fullbrakingefforttotriggertheABSevenwhentheroad
surfaceisslippery.
Note:Onsoftsurfacessuchaspowderysnow,sand
orgravel,vehiclesequippedwithABSmayhavea
brakingdistancegreaterthanthosewithoutABS.This
isbecausethenaturalactionoflockedwheelsonsoft
surfacesistobuildupawedgeofmaterialinfrontof
(ortothesideof,ifsteering)thetyrecontactpatch.
Thiseffectassiststhecartostopwhenbrakingorto
changedirectionwhensteering.
IMPORTANT
AlthoughABScangreatlyimprovedrivingsafety,the
realsafetystilldependsonthedriver'sownstandard
drivingbehavior .
Thenormalbrakingsystemremainsfullyoperational
andisnotaffectedbypartialorfulllossofanti-lock
brakingsystem(ABS).
