10.1 Digital glossary
AnDi – A small and simple digital decoder that controls driving direction in analog mode
Bit – Smallest unit of digital information with values of 0 and 1 (off / on)
Booster – Additional power for your layout. Provides power and amplies digital signal
BUS / BUS-System – A data network that connects the different components of your systems with the
digital central station
Byte – 8 bits of memory can represent values between 0 and 255
Consisting – Multiple locomotives can be controlled and act as a single locomotive
CV – Conguration Variable. 8-bit value that can be used to customized decoder behavior.
CV-Programming – With the help of a digital command station you can read and write CV’s
DCC – Digital Command Control, protocol for the communication between command station and
decoder; standardized by the NMRA
Decoder – A digital component for reading and handling digital signals from the the track
Digital address / DCC-Address – Digital commands can be send to a specic address. The decoder
only executes commands for its address. All other commands are ignored.

Driving steps – The range between 0% and 100% of motor power is divided into steps which will result
in different speed levels
Track occupancy detector – An electric component that is connect to the track, recognizes if a section
of track is occupied or not
LNET / LocoNet – Proprietary bus protocol for bidirectional communication between occupancy
detectors, decoders and command stations
Magnetic accessories – Accessories that use a magnet for action
MOROP – Organization of model train fans Europe, responsible for the NEM standards
NEM – Norm of European model trains
NMRA – National Model Railroad Association
