10.2 Android glossary
Access pointAllows wireless device to connect to the network.
App (Application)A software program that provides a user interface and allows the user to perform
specic tasks or actions.
Status bar / notication bar – Provides a quick overview of the system status at the top edge of the
display. It can be “pulled” down by swiping down.
Booting – Start-up process of the operation system during which all necessary data and conguration
is loaded into main memory.
Default valueA standard value that is stored before user input. During „factory reset“ all conguration
will be restored to default values.
Display-TimeoutTime of inactivity that has to pass before the display will switch off automatically.
Factory reset – Deletes all user data and settings and restores default values.
Home screen – The main desktop of the Android operating system where links to apps or folders can
be placed for quick access
IP-Address – Internet Protocoll Address – A unique address assigned to every device that connects to
the internet
LAN – Local Area Network – A wired network that allows a local data interchange.
Open Source LicenseA usually royalty free license that allows the source code to be modied and/
or shared under certain conditions. Open source makes it possible for everybody to modify or change
software programs as the source code is available for everyone.
Router – Connects the home network to the internet. Routes trafc to and from the internet. Usually
also provides network addresses to the devices on the local network.
SSID – Service Set Identier – The name of a WiFi network
Update – Updates are provided for most apps on regular intervals to address problems or to improve
performance.
WLAN – Wireless local area network – Wireless network that allows connected devices to
communicate with each other.
WPS - WiFi Protected SetupAutomatic connection setup between two WLAN devices using buttons
(both devices must be equipped with this feature), also called „push button“-method. With this method
both devices automatically exchange passwords, IP-addresses and names.
