9.3 Appendix C – Spares
Recommended Spares – A Definition.
Recommended spares can be classified into 3 main categories.
Primary – Front line Spares
Secondary – Second Line Spares
Service Spares
There can be many variations on the definitions for these categories. Below is a general set of rules to
apply when an item needs to be classified;
Primary Spares
These parts would be the minimum required to provide an emergency breakdown spares kit. These
items are parts that in the event of a breakdown would stop the machine running. Examples of a
primary spare would be:
Drive Belts, Fuses, Guard Switches, Sensors, etc
The key benefits of a Primary spares kit are that the items can be changed quickly using parts that the
customers has on site – this helps to reduce down time.
Secondary Spares
Other items that should appear as a secondary spare are ones that in the event of a breakdown would
stop the machine running. The determining factor that makes these items secondary and not primary is
price. Customers can therefore have the choice as to whether they want to stock all or some of the
secondary spares depending on their budgets and allowable machine downtime. Examples of these
secondary spares would be;
Motors,PLC,Inverters, etc.
Service Spares
Service Spares are made up from parts that are consumable service items that the customer may
benefit from stocking. Examples of these items would be;
Bushes, Bearings, Clutches, Cylinders.
These are parts that will wear over a period of time, and although they will be needed to be replaced,
the customer will generally have enough time to plan the replacement of the items at their convenience.
