Adjusting the Brake Pedal Linkage
To adjust the brake pedal linkage, refer to the following procedures.
1. Park the vehicle on a clean level surface and block the rear wheels to
prevent movement.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
3. Loosen the jam nut on the brake linkage.
4. Tighten the adjusting bolt until the brake cables are slightly tight.
NOTE: There should be some slack in the brake cables. Do
not overtighten the brake cables. Overtightening of the adjusting
bolt and the cables will result in brake drag and premature
failure of the brake shoes.
5. Tighten the jam nut against the clevis and lower the vehicle.
6. Check the brake pedal to see that the park brake lock engages with
medium pressure on the lower half of the pedal.
7. Release the park brake and test drive the vehicle checking for brake
drag.
8. Check the travel of the brake pedal. It should have about 1/2” of travel
before it engages the brakes.
Always use a lifting strap, hoist and jack stands of adequate
capacity to lift and support the vehicle. Failure to use lifting and
supporting devices of rated load capacity to support the vehicle
may result in serious injury and property damage.
