variance( returns a LIST containing the variance of LIST1.
variance(LIST1) ⇒ LIST
The statistics functions variance( and varPop( calculate the variance of a population
differently.
variance( divides by n-1, and varPop( divides by n.
Note: LIST1 must contain at least two elements
Example
Setup:
list1={1,2,3,L6,3,L2}
1. Highlight the first cell of a list (list2) where you want to return the variance.
2. Press … (List) and select 3:Math. Then select 8:variance(. The variance( function is
displayed in the entry line. Enter the list (
list1) for which you want to display the
variance of the elements.
Tip: You can press 2 °, highlight a list,
and then press ¸ to paste the list name into
the list editor. Be sure to close arguments with a
right parenthesis (d).
You can also press … (List) and select 1:Names
to display the VAR-LINK [All] menu.
3. Press ¸ to calculate and display the variance.
Note:
To generate a decimal approximation press
¥ ¸ for step 3. To generate a decimal
approximation for a single-element value, move
the cursor to the fraction for which you want the
approximate decimal, press ¸ to highlight it
on the entry line, and then press ¥ ¸.
You can also set the calculator to
APPROXIMATE mode. (Press 3 „ and then
set Exact/Approx to APPROXIMATE.)
