Thereareanumberoffactorsthatcancontributetounsatisfactoryqualityofcut,
someofwhichmaybeturfconditions.Turfconditionssuchasexcessivethatch,
sponginessorattemptingtocutofftoomuchgrassheightmaynotalwaysbe
overcomebyadjustingthecuttingunit.Itisimportanttorememberthatthelower
theheight-of-cut,themorecriticalthesefactorsare.

ServiceandRepairs(page7–8)fordetailedadjustmentandrepairinformation.

1.Reelbearingcondition
Checkandreplacethereelbearingsifnecessary;refertoCuttingUnit
Assembly(page7–26).
2.ReelandbedknifesharpnessAreeland/orbedknifethathasroundedcuttingedgesorriing
(groovedorwavyappearance)cannotbecorrectedbytighteningthe
bedknifetoreelcontact.Grindthereeltoremovetaperand/orriing.
Grindthebedknifetosharpenand/orremoveriing.
Themostcommoncauseofriingisbedknifetoreelcontactthat
istootight.
Anewbedknifemustbegroundorbacklappedafterinstallationto
thebedbar.
3.BedknifetoreeladjustmentCheckthebedknifetoreelcontactdaily.Thebedknifemusthavelight
contactacrosstheentirereel.Nocontactwilldullthecuttingedges.
Excessivecontactaccelerateswearofbothedges.Qualityofcutis
adverselyaffectedbybothconditions.
Slightlydullcuttingedgesmaybecorrectedbybacklapping;referto
Backlapping(page7–8).
Excessivelydullcuttingedgesmustbecorrectedbygrindingthereel
andbedknife;refertoPreparingtheReelforGrinding(page7–34).
4.Height-of-cutEffectiveoractualheight-of-cutdependsonthemowerweightand
turfconditions.Effectiveheight-of-cutwillbedifferentthanthebench
setheight-of-cut.
5.Properbedknifeforheight-of-cutIfthebedknifeistoothickforeffectiveheight-of-cut,poorqualityof
cutwillresult.
6.StabilityofbedbarEnsurethatthebedbarpivotboltsaresecurelyseated;refertoBedbar

7.NumberofreelbladesUsecorrectnumberofbladesforclipfrequencyandoptimum
height-of-cutrange.

Reelandrearrollershouldbeparallelforpropercuttingperformance;

9.Rollercondition
Ensurethattherollersrotatefreely.Repairtherollerbearingsif

10.Tractionspeed
Thetractiondrivebeltmaybelooseorworn.Checktheconditionof
thetractionbelt.Replacethetractiondrivebeltifnecessary.
