Amp12voltalternatorwithseparatevoltageregulatorsuppliedbytheengine
manufacturer.
Thefollowingisasimpletestusedtodetermineifthechargingsystemis
functioning.Itwilltellyouifthechargingsystemhasanoutput,butnotits
capacity.
1.UseadigitalmultimetersettoDCvoltsandconnectthepositive(+)
multimeterleadtothepositivebatterypostandthenegative(–)multimeter
leadtothenegativebatterypost.
2.Recordthebatteryvoltage.Thebatteryvoltagemustbegreaterthan5VDC
forthealternatorsystemtohaveanyoutput.Ifthebatteryvoltageislessthan
5VDC,chargethebatterybeforeperformingthischargingsystemtest.
3.Starttheengineandrunathighidle(3400RPM).Allowthebatterytocharge
foratleast3minutes.Recordthebatteryvoltage.
Note:Uponstartingtheengine,thebatteryvoltagewilldropandthenshould
increaseoncetheengineisrunning.
Dependingupontheconditionofthebatterychargeandbatterytemperature,
thechargingsystemvoltagewillincreaseatdifferentratesasthebattery
charges.
4.Afterrunningtheengineforatleast3minutes,thebatteryvoltageshouldbe
atleast0.50volthigherthantheinitialbatteryvoltage.
