GENERATOR EXERCISING
The automatic generator start mode also includes an automatic generator exercising system that sets a
maximum number of days allowed between operation of the generator. After the automatic generator
exercising start command is initiated, the generator will start and run for 15 minutes every EXERCISE
PERIOD DAYS since the last time the generator was operated. The number of days between exercise
periods is adjusted under the GEN AUTO START SETUP (12) menu heading. If the EXERCISE PERIOD
DAYS menu item is set to one, then the generator will start every day at the end of the “quiet time” period,
as long as the generator was not operated during this period. To disable the automatic generator
exercising system, set the EXERCISE PERIOD DAYS menu item to zero.
If the generator does not run for at least 5 minutes, the automatic start system will consider it a failed
attempt and it will restart the generator. After 5 attempts, it will indicate a GENERATOR START ERROR
in the ERROR CAUSES menu heading and the red ERROR light will turn on. To clear the error, select
OFF from the SET GENERATOR menu item, accessed by pressing the green GEN MENU button.
GENERATOR ERROR CAUSES
The automatic start system will attempt to start the generator 5 times by closing the starting relay RY8
until it reaches its MAX CRANKING SECONDS setting or the inverter senses an AC voltage above 80-
volts AC on its on the AC HOT INPUT terminal (MAXIMUM AC AMPS IN’ switch must be in the AC2
position). Once the inverter senses 80 volts AC on the AC HOT INPUT terminal it will open after a half-
second delay and the attempts counter will be reset to zero after successfully running for 5 minutes. If the
generator dies within the 5-minute period of being started, the inverter will attempt to restart the
generator. The unsuccessful run will be considered a failed start attempt. After 5 start attempts, the
ERROR LED will be illuminated and the generator start system will shut down. If the generator dies after
successfully running for 5 minutes, the start attempt counter will be reset to zero and the inverter will only
restart the generator if the auto start voltage setting or load amps AC setting is reached for the required
time delay period.
To clear a generator start error, move the cursor from AUTO or ON to OFF in the SET GENERATOR
menu item. This clears all the generator error conditions and resets the start attempts counter. You can
access the SET GENERATOR menu item by pressing the green GEN MENU button.
The red ERROR LED indicator on the SWRC will blink slowly if one of the following generator errors occurs:
GEN SPEED ERROR: Indicates that the generator has synchronized but the frequency is not well
adjusted (63 - 67 on the high-end or 53 - 57 on the low end).
GEN FAILED TO START: Indicates that five 'Generator Start Attempts' have occurred without
successfully starting the generator, which could be caused by 1) Voltage has not reached 80 VAC during
the 'MAX CRANK PERIOD' or 2) Voltage does not maintain > 80 VAC for the majority of the time during
the 'Generator Sync Period'.
GEN STOPPED DUE TO V/F: Indicates that the generator was running but was not operating within the
voltage and frequency tolerances and not able to connect (out of sync), or the unit can not maintain
synchronization (AC voltage or frequency is out of tolerance).
GEN MAX RUN TIME ERROR: Indicates that the generator ran for a period of time that exceeded the
SET MAX RUN TIME, (this is an advisory error only and will not cause any other effect). This setting is
used to determine if the generator is running longer than a calculated run time (i.e. total loads, battery
state of charge…). To reduce the potential for causing future error indications, increase the SET
MAXIMUM RUN TIME menu item setting under the GEN AUTO START SETUP (12) menu heading in
the SETUP menu.
