TheDecayparameterspecifiesthetimetheALCwilltaketoincreasethegain,raisingthe
signalfromthecurrentlevel(belowtargetlevel)tothetargetlevel.AslowDecaysetting
canbeusedifafixedoutputlevelshouldbemaintained,whileafastDecaysettingcanbe
usedtocompressthedynamicrangeofspeech.
TheAttackparameterspecifiesthereactiontimeinwhichtheALCstartsattenuating
afterasuddenincreaseininputlevelabovethetargetlevel.Theattacktimeshouldbe
fasttoavoidanydistortioncausedbyclipping,butwhentheattacktimeistoofast,the
ALCwilloverreacttoveryshortpeaks,causingaudibledistortion.
Noise gate
Thenoisegatewillautomaticallymutetheinputswhentheleveloftheinputsignalis
belowacertainpredefinedlevel.Thiseleminatesunwantednoisecausedbyanunused
inputontheoutputs.Thenoisegatesettings(Thresholdlevelandnoisegatetype)canbe
madeontherightsideoftheALCsettingswindow.
TheThresholdparameterspecifiesthelevelatwhichthenoisegatewillbeenabled.
Whentheleveloftheappliedinputsignalisbelowthesetthresholdlevel,thenoisegate
willbeenabled.Thiswillcutoffthesignal,resultinginnonoiseontheoutputs.Toavoid
unwantednoises(noisegateopeningandclosingrapidly)whenthesignalleveliscloseto
thethresholdlevel,theM2noisegatefunctionusesatimeoutperiodincombinationwith
hysteresis.
Theoperationmodesforthenoisegateareselectablebetweenfourpresetswhichare
Default,Digitalmute,AnalogfadeandAnalogfade+Digitalmute.
InDefault mode,thegainremainsatthecurrentlevelwhenthenoisegateenables.This
preventsincreasingbackgroundnoiseduringperiodsofsilence.Therewillbesomenoise
presentintheoutputsignal,butcomparedtowithoutnoisegate,thenoiselevelwon’t
increaseuntilltheMaxGainlevelhasbeenreached.
InDigital mutemode,theoutputwillmuteinstantlywhenthenoisegateenables.This
modecompletelyeleminatesanybackgroundnoise,althoughtheeffectofanabruptmute
maynotsoundpleasanttotheears.
InAnalog fademode,thesoundofthenoisegateoperationwillbeimprovedbyfading
thegaintoaminimumvalue.Afterthefading,thegainwillstayattheminimumvalue
withoutmutingcompletely.Stillaminimumofbackgroundnoisewillexistintheoutput
signal.Thismodehasthedisadvantagethatwhenthenoisegateisbeingopened,the
signalwillfade-upduringthesetDecaytimeandwon’tbepresentinstantly.
In Analog fade + Digital mutemode,thegainwillfadetoaminimumvalue(similarto
theAnalogfademode)whileafterthisfadeinterval,thedigitalmuteisactivatedinstantly.
Thismethoddoesn’tcontainanabruptmuteandallbackgroundnoiseiseleminatedby
thedigitalmute.Thismodesoundsthebestingeneralandhasthesamedisadvantageas
analogfademode:whenthenoisegateisbeingopened,thesignalwillfade-upduring
thesetDecaytimeandwon’tbepresentinstantly.
