A WARNING
Never unfasten safety belt while the vehicle is
moving. Doing so will increase your risk of be-
ing injured
or kill ed.

Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se-
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri-
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly positioned on the body.
Imp r oper seating positions reduce the effect ive-
ness of safety belts and wi ll even i ncrease the
risk of injury and death by moving the safety bel t
to cr it ical areas of the body. I mp r oper seating
positions al so increase the risk of se r io us in jur y
and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an
occupant who is not in the correct seating posi-
tion. A driver
is responsible for the safety of all
vehicle
occupants and especially for children.
Therefore:
.. Never permit anyone to assume an incorrect
seated position in the vehicle while traveling

Safety belt tensioner
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a
particular severity
and in a rollover, safety belts
are tensioned automatically .
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts for t he front seat ing posit ions
are equipped with safety belt pretensioners. T he
system is act ivat ed by se n sors in front, side and
r
ea r- end collisions of great severity and in a roll-
over. This
tightens the be lt and takes up belt
slack ~ .& in Service and disposal of safety belt
pretensioner on page 187. Taking up the slack
helps
to reduce forward occupant movement dur-
ing a collision.
A WARNING
- It is poss ible for the pretensioners to deploy
incorrectly.
- The pyrotechnic
system can only provide
protection for one collision. If t he pyr otech-
nic pretens i oners deploy, the pretensioning
syst em must be replaced.
(!) Tips
The pyrotechnic safety belt pretensioners can
only
dep loy once.
- The
safety belt pretensioners do not deploy
in minor frontal, side and rear-end colli-
sions .
- A
fine dust is rel eased when the pyrotechnic
safety belt pretensioners dep loy. This is nor-
ma l and is not caused by a fi re in the vehi-
cle.
