Pattern Matching Tips
The query criteria can be entered as an exact value to be matched.
The criteria entry can also include wildcard characters—asterisk (*)
and question mark (?)—to search for an approximate match.
Following are some useful tips for constructing query criteria:
•
A blank field matches anything, including blank fields, on the
DICOM Q/R SCP server. For example, if
Smith
is entered as the
Patient Name and the other two fields are left blank, all studies
with
Smith
will be returned, regardless of the patient IDs or
accession numbers related to the studies.
•
The asterisk (*) character matches any number of characters,
including no characters. For example, the accession number
entry
*246*
matches any accession number with
246
in it,
including 2469876, 8724699, 7643246, and simply 246.
•
The question mark (?) character matches any single character. For
example, the Patient ID entry
12345?
matches any patient ID that
is 6 characters long and begins with
12345
.
•
The caret (^) character is used to separate patient last names and
first names. For example, the Patient Name entry
SMITH^JOHN
matches a patient name of
John Smith
.
The Patient Name entry
SMIT*^J*
matches any patient name for
which the last name starts with
Smit
and the first name starts
with
J
(for example, John Smith, Joan Smitty, or Jack Smitherton).
Possible DICOM Q/R SCP Device Query Criteria Limitations
•
Patient Name is typically not case-sensitive, although this
property is DICOM Q/R SCP device-dependent.
•
Some Q/R SCP devices do not properly handle a search string
with a single asterisk (*). That is, the Q/R SCP device does not
consider
*
to match an empty string. For example, if
Smith*
was
used with such an Q/R SCP device, the patient name
Smithers
would be considered a match, but
Smith
would not.
