5.3.4.1 Start of Packet

The‘<’and‘>’charactersindicatethestartofpacket.Theymaynotappearanywhereelsewithinthebodyofthemessage.
5.3.4.2 Target Address
Upto9,999devicescanbeuniquelyaddressed;inbothEIA‐485andEIA‐232applications,thepermissiblerangeofvaluesis1to9999.
TheaddressisprogrammedintoaTargetunitusingtheremotecontrolport.
The Controller sends a packet with the address of a Target – the destination of the packet. When the Target responds,
the address used is the same address, to indicate to the Controller the source of the packet. The Controller does not
have its own address.
5.3.4.3 Address Delimiter
Thisisthe“forwardslash”character'/'(ASCIIcode47).
5.3.4.4 Instruction Code
This isa three‐character alphabeticsequence thatidentifiesthemessage subject. Whereverpossible,the instruction codes havebeen
chosentohavesomesignificancetoaidinthereadability ofthemessage,shoulditbedisplayedinitsrawASCIIform.Only uppercase
andlowercasealphabeticcharactersmaybeused(A‐Z,ASCIIcode
s65‐90).
