Steering
Information relating to dierent
vehicle processes.
To make the vehicle more diicult to steal, al-
ways lock the steering before leaving it.
Steering
On vehicles with electromechanical steering,
the power steering automatically adjusts ac-
cording to the driving speed, the steering
wheel torque and the orientation of the
wheels. The electromechanical steering only
works with the drive system connected.
If the power steering does not work or does
not work properly, considerably more force
than usual will have to be applied to move the
steering wheel.
Electronic steering column lock
The steering column locks electronically:
Stop the vehicle and apply the electronic
parking brake ›››page198.
If the ignition is switched on, the igni-
tion/start button is pressed or
Open the driver’s door and get out of the ve-
hicle; this switches the ignition o. The steer-
ing column is locked.
Steering assist
This assists the driver in critical situations.
It recommends turning the steering wheel
to perform a corrective manoeuvre (counter-
steering), turning slightly to avoid skidding
››› .
WARNING
If the power steering does not work, much
more force is required to turn the steering
wheel, which can make it diicult to control
the vehicle.
The power steering only works with the
drive system connected.
WARNING
Along with the ESC, steering assist helps the
driver to control the vehicle’s steering in
some critical driving situations. However, the
driver is ultimately responsible for steering
the vehicle at all times. Power-assisted steer-
ing does not remove this responsibility.
Troubleshooting
Steering defect
The warning lamp lights up or ashes red.
There is a fault in the electromechanical steer-
ing or the electronic steering column lock.
Stop driving! Seek specialist assistance.
If the warning lamp lights up red, the steer-
ing may be sti because the power steering is
not working.
If the warning lamp ashes red, the steering
column cannot be unlocked.
Do not allow the vehicle to be towed on its
own wheels.
Steering defect
The control lamp lights up or ashes yellow.
The steering is stier or reacts more sensitively
than usual.
The control lamp lights up and remains lit:
Switch the drive system back on and drive
slowly for a short distance.
Contact a specialist workshop if the control
lamp remains on.
The control lamp ashes:
Turn the steering wheel slightly from one
side to the other.
Turn o the ignition and turn it on again.
Please note the warnings displayed in the
Digital Cockpit.
If the control lamp continues ashing after
the ignition has been switched on, do not con-
tinue driving. Seek specialist assistance.
