The drivetrain of a bicycle refers to all parts that transmit power to
the rear wheel including the pedals, chain, chainwheel, crank set and
freewheel.
Pedalsareavailableinavarietyofshapes,sizesandmaterials,and
eacharedesignedwithaparticularpurposeinmind.Somepedals
can be fitted with toe clips and straps. These help to keep the feet
correctly positioned and allow the rider to exert pulling force, as well as
downwardpressure,onthepedals.Useoftoeclipswithstrapsrequires
practice to acquire the necessary skill to operate them safely.
Pedalsshouldbeinspectedeverymonth,takingnoteofthefollowing
areas:
• Checkcorrecttightnessintothecrankarms.Ifpedalsare
allowed to become loose, they will not only be dangerous but will
also cause irreparable damage to the cranks.
• Checkthatpedalbearingsareproperlyadjusted.Movethe
pedals up and down, and right to left, and also rotate them by
hand.Ifyoudetectanyloosenessorroughnessinthepedal
bearings then adjustment, lubrication or replacement is required.
• Ensurethatthefrontandrearpedalreflectorsarecleanand
securely fitted.
• Alsoensurethatthetoeclips,iffitted,aresecurelytightenedto
the pedals.
