Engine Oil Life
Description
The engine control module does not monitor any direct physical or chemical property of oil, it only
accumulates data from its sensors and the oil’s viscosity, total base number (a measure of remaining
detergency), oxidation level and other factors.
Since the engine control module cannot measure these key properties like a chemist in a lab would
measure them, it estimates oil life based on an algorithm. It track climate, driving habits and other
conditions like idle time, engine temperatures, trip times, engine loads, starts and stops.
When the Oil Life percentage is low it will trigger a Time for Service message on the cluster (at least if
the System Clock is valid, which it might not be with an aftersales infotainment unit)
