Chapter 1: Introduction to the FaroArm

Volumetric Accuracy
Perform a Sphere to Sphere or Step Gauge in order to certify the
volumetric accuracy of the equipment.
• Use a calibrated Ball Probe. See “Installing Probes” on page 21 and
“Calibrate Probe” on page 79.
• Run the Sphere to Sphere, or Step Gauge Certification command.
1 Measure points on each sphere, or on each step from multiple
directions.
2 Make sure that you move the joints of the FaroArm while
measuring the points.
3 Do not digitize a point if any of the encoders reach their end stop.

4 Avoid a position where a degree of freedom is lost in the FaroArm.

FaroArm Performance
The FaroArm performance testing standard is the North American
ASME or European ISO standard. FaroArm test methods are a subset of
those given in the B89.4.22 standard. Single-point repeatability is
measured using a hard probe in a reference hole. Volumetric
performance is measured using a traceable length artifact.
Measurements are well distributed in all regions of the working volume.
Single Point Articulation Performance Test (SPAT)
The probe of the FaroArm is placed into a conical socket, and individual
points are measured from multiple approach directions. Each individual
point measurement is analyzed as a range of deviations in X, Y, Z. This
test is a method for determining articulating measurement machine
repeatability.
• FARO reports this as (Max.-Min.)/2.
This represents the error as the range of error between the least value
and the highest value.
